A poorly maintained boiler is more likely to break down and cost a lot of money to repair or even replace. Ensuring you get your boiler serviced regularly means it is less likely to have problems and will be more cost-efficient in the long run. So how do you know if your boiler isn’t working efficiently? There are some signs to look out for.

Costs are increasing

Whether you have an oil or a gas boiler, this will be one to watch out for. If your gas bills are suddenly higher or you find yourself filling up with heating oil more often, it could be a sign that your boiler is not working efficiently. Newer boilers or those that are running efficiently will recover more heat, whereas an older or less efficient boiler can’t recover the heat as well. This will result in you needing to switch on the heating more often, thus costs increase. It could also be a sign of a leak if you have an oil boiler, so it is definitely worth getting a boiler service to check for this.

Strange noises

If your pipes or radiators have started to become very noisy as the heating comes on, such as tapping or a clunking noise, it could indicate an issue. You may also notice noises coming from the boiler itself. The system may need to be flushed and radiators may need to be bled to resolve the issue.

Cold areas

If you notice that certain rooms or areas with radiators are not heating up correctly, it could be a sign of a blockage and that your boiler isn’t working efficiently.

Drop in pressure

If the pressure in your boiler drops too low it can cause your heating not to work correctly. Check the pressure gauge on your boiler; if it’s dropping below 1 then there is an issue. Check for a leak, and call us to arrange a visit.
