This one of the most asked questions we get from calls to the office.

Lets see if we can help you with this commonly asked question; Is My Boiler Broken?

If you answer YES to any of the 5 questions below, your boiler may be broken!

1. Is your boiler making weird noises?

Some noises are normal for a boiler to make. When you put your boiler on and it starts to heat up, it makes subtle noises. Although anything louder than the usual is never a good sign. Also if the noises start to sound different, you will soon be asking; is my boiler broken?

Sounds like gurgling, clunking, whistling, or banging could mean there is air trapped in the system and may need to be repaired or replaced by a professional. Other causes could be a faulty pump, low water pressure or even a build-up of limescale known as kettling.

Finding out exactly where the noise is coming from will determine what is the cause of your noisy boiler. Next step would be figuring out what type of noise it is making. Is it a vibrating noise? a banging noise? or a gurgling noise?

2. Are your radiators not heating up?

If your radiators are not heating up, you may have a bleeding problem or a balance issue in your radiators. If not, your broken boiler may be a bigger issue. You may need to get a professional to clean out your pipes or replace some elements of your heating system.

The most common cause of radiators not heating up is a build up of air or sludge in the system. If it’s just the top of your radiator is not heating up, you may just need to bleed your radiator.

Every household must bleed their radiator from time to time. After awhile air gets trapped in your radiator and when heating up your home, your radiator can often confuse the air as hot water. Therefore it acts as though it is fully heated when a lot of it is just built up air.

Some households bleed their own radiators but it is not the easiest process for those of you who have not tried it before. If you do not feel comfortable bleeding your own radiators, contact us HERE.

If just certain radiators in your home aren’t getting hot then your radiators could need balancing, which can also be done without the help of an engineer but only if you feel confident doing it. The process involves adjusting the valves on all of the radiators in your property, to ensure each is getting enough hot water to work effectively.

If your issue is not because it needs to bleed or because you need to balance out your radiators, then you may have built up grim and dirt that needs to be cleaned out. This cannot be done at home and you would need to higher in a professional to fix it. This build up can be blocking a free flow of hot water into your radiators. A professional engineer can remove this build up by chemically cleaning or flushing the system.

3. Do you own an old boiler?

You may be asking yourself is my boiler broken because it’s old? A boilers lifespan is between 10 and 20 years depending on the grade, quality and type. If your boiler is older than 10 years and your having issues with it – it may be time to upgrade.

Many of us get scared at the thought of buying a new boiler but it can actually save you so much money in the long run! Maintenance cost to keep your current boiler and the higher bills trying to heat your home can be solved with a replacement boiler.

Also more damage can be done to your heating system when you continue to use a broken boiler!

For more information on how to save money by upgrading your boiler, see our blog HERE.

4. Are your exterior pipes frozen?

This is actually a very common answer for people who call asking ‘is my boiler broken?’, particularly during the winter months. All condensing boilers have a condensate pipe and most of these pipes will run outside our home into a drain or sewage waste disposal system.

Your pipes may run outdoors where water can build up and freeze over or shaded areas where they can frost up from cold and icy weather.

Always check your exterior pipes if your boiler appears to be broken. The condensate pipe your looking for is a plastic pipe (usually white and roughly 2cm wide) and should lead outside of your property into a drain.

It is possible to thaw out the pipe yourself but it is safest to hire a professional in case there are further difficulties.

5. Is your boiler leaking?

A leaking boiler does not always mean it needs to be replaced as there is a variety of reasons why your boiler may be leaking. Although you should definitely get a professional to look at your boiler so they can inspect thoroughly and find the root of the problem.

The cause of the issue is usually solved by determining where exactly the leak coming from. Is it an internal problem? Is it leaking from the pipes or the tank? These questions must be asked before the typical question – is my boiler broken?

The most common source of a leaky boiler is a broken pump seal or pressure valve. If the leak is coming from the pressure valve it may be a case that your boiler pressure is too high. If it’s coming from the pump seal, it may have become worn out and needs to be replaced.

In some cases leaking can be due to boilers not being fitted properly or caused by corrosion.

If you have answered YES to any of these questions, you could have a broken on your hands!

Reopening Ireland is happening quicker than we originally thought!

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar made his announcement on Friday 19th June 2020, that there will be an acceleration on the Road Map in Phase three.

Leo said that the reopening of a number of sectors has now moved into phase three of reopening Ireland, such as cinemas, gyms, and places of worship.

Employees and business owners nationwide welcome the positive news and starting Monday 29th June 2020, phase three will allow a lot more businesses to open their doors again.

Leo said because of the progress made in Ireland with Covid 19, the roadmap to reopening the country is being re-phased and apart from some exceptions, most things have been moved to Phase 3. This includes leisure facilities, hairdressers, barbers, and beauticians.

This announcement has brought hope to so many businesses who have been struggling over the past couple of months and should help our economy immensely going forward!

On the topic Leo also said:

All sporting activities, including adult and child leagues, can resume but the number of spectators will be limited.

Mass gatherings of 50 people indoors and 200 outdoors will be allowed from Monday 29th June 2020 and that all going well, that will rise to 100 indoors and 500 outdoors on Monday 20th July 2020.

He said we all need to stay careful, and that while progress is being made the announcement comes with terms and conditions.

It can be overwhelming choosing the best gas boiler for your home.

When it comes to choosing the best gas boiler for your home there are several aspects to think about including the size of your property and how much hot water you and your family can expect to use. To help you decide, we’ve put together the following guide on the different boiler types available to you!

Gas boilers are an ideal choice for homes that have a traditional heating and hot water system. The hot water system needs to be connected with a separate hot water cylinder. One cold water storage tank is needed to feed the hot water cylinder and a tank to maintain the water level of the central heating system.

The factors to think about when choosing a boiler include:

Is the boiler for a home or another property?

Why do you need a new boiler? Has your current boiler broke or are you looking for a more energy efficient boiler?

What type of house do you live in? Apartment, Semi detached, detached, terrace, bungalow?

How many bathrooms do you have?

How many bedrooms do you have?

What type of fuel do you require?

What type of boiler do you require?

Where will your boiler be located?

Where will your flue exit the property?

If you are unsure about any of these questions or need clarity on the best gas boiler for your home, please contact us HERE and we can help you.

See below the gas boilers we provide along with the sizes and how much they hold so you can make the right decision for your home:

It has been a challenging couple of months but thankfully we are seeing businesses opening back up in Dublin.

After the closure of all non essential businesses on Friday 27th of March 2020, businesses in Dublin and nationwide have been struggling with loss of income.

The construction industry has welcomed their staff back to work on Monday 18th of May 2020 during Phase 1 of the Covid 19 reopening plan.

The Coronavirus has brought about some challenging times for the global society. We at Ramor Renewables were delighted to get back on site last week after almost 8 weeks of closure.

It’s great to see so many businesses opening back up in Dublin although some adaptions and changes have been made to nearly all businesses to ensure the safety of staff.

At Ramor Renewables, all employees adapted well to the 2 metre social distance and adhered to the Government Guidelines. Our goal is to keep people safe and to also secure the smooth operations on our sites.

We worked hard to ensure that all safety Guidelines were adhered to, as the health and safety of our employees and customers remain our number one priority. We will continue to follow the Government developments closely and follow all instructions and guidelines given.

We are now looking forward to welcoming the Phase 2 of the Government Roadmap that may allow for us to carry out further works in the households of our clients.

Be sure to get in touch for repairs on your boiler in your home in Dublin! Or if you need your boiler replaced, contact us HERE.

Phase 2 is due to go ahead on Monday 8th of June 2020. For Dublin and county’s nationwide we will see the following changes with Phase 2:

The advice will be to still avoid unnecessary journeys wherever possible. You will be able to travel up to 20 kilometres away from your home as opposed to the 5 kilometre limit which was in place since 5 May.

Up to 4 people may visit another household for a short period of time but everyone must keep at least 2 metres apart from people they don’t live with.

People who can work safely while maintaining a 2-metre distance from others. Workers, like those who work on their own, as well as other workers who can keep a 2 metre distance from others can return to work. Social distancing requirements continue to apply.

Organisations are to develop plans for a return to onsite working by employees in light of COVID-19, considering: social distancing compliance, hygiene and cleaning, compliance in higher risk situations, plans for medically vulnerable or pregnant people and extended opening hours to enable social distancing.

Small retail outlets can reopen with a small number of staff on the basis that the retailer can control the number of individuals that staff and customers interact with at any one time.

Replace Boiler are back open for business!

From Monday 18th May 2020, we saw reopening businesses on construction sites nationwide.

We are delighted to be opening our doors for building sites and replacing boilers in your home.

On the evening of Friday 27th March 2020, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced the lockdown for the majority of businesses in Ireland. That included to work carried out by ourselves.

With nearly 8 weeks of closure, we are not only celebrating the reopening of businesses but we are also ensuring the safety of our employees as they get back to work.

Wash your hands:

after coughing or sneezing

before and after eating

before and after preparing food

if you were in contact with someone who has a fever or respiratory symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing)

before and after being on public transport if you must use it

before and after being in a crowd (especially an indoor crowd)

when you arrive and leave buildings including your home or anyone else’s home

before having a cigarette or vaping

if your hands are dirty

For more information on the measurements we’ve put in place or for a free quote on your boiler, contact us HERE.

Roadmap for reopening society and businesses issued by Gov.ie

The reopening of construction sites was part of ‘Phase 1’ from the governments notice of reopening society and businesses. Also included in Phase 1 (issued on Monday 18th May 2020) was the reopening of hardware stores, builders merchants and those providing essential supplies and tools for gardening, farming and agriculture; garden centres and farmers markets.

Further details of ‘Phase 1’ can be found HERE.

Phase 2 is due to go ahead on Monday 8th June 2020. Phase 2 should allow small retail outlets to reopen with a small number of staff on the basis that the retailer can control the number of individuals that staff and customers interact with at any one time.

Phase 2 should also allow public libraries opening so long as the numbers allowed in are limited, social distancing is observed and there is strict hand-sanitising in place for anyone who goes into the library.

Phase 3 is due to go ahead on Monday 29th June 2020. Phase 2 should allow the opening of all other non-essential retail outlets on the basis of a restriction on the number of staff and customers per square metre so that social distancing can be maintained.

This is to be limited to retail outlets with a street-level entrance and exit and does not include those in enclosed shopping centres due to higher risk.

During phase 3 they also hope to see cafés and restaurants providing on-premises food and beverages can reopen. They must comply with social distancing and strict cleaning protocols.

For more information from Gov.ie on the roadmap, see HERE.

Hygiene at work for reopening businesses:

Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean. Do not share objects that touch your mouth such as bottles and cups.

Disposable gloves: Do not wear disposable gloves in place of washing hands. The virus can get on gloves in the same way it gets on hands.

Ensure people cough/sneeze into a tissue, sleeve or elbow to catch any droplets.

Face masks: Face masks are unlikely to be of benefit it the wearer is not sick.

Ensure no person with symptoms attends work/site. For example: fever (temperature), cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, etc.

Workers must adhere to a social distance of 2 metres from each other.

Ensuring that all surfaces and objects are cleaned and disinfected regularly.

For more information on safety for reopening building sites, see HERE.

Some more tips to see if you need your boiler fixed

Is your home not heating up? Are your bills higher than usual? Do you need to get your boiler fixed?

Sometimes it’s hard to tell if your boiler is working correctly or not. Many people just presume their house is difficult to heat or that their boiler problems are normal. Although there are certain signs to look out for to see if you need your boiler fixed.

See below some of our top tips to see if you need your boiler fixed.

Difficult to heat your home

It takes longer and costs more money to heat a home with a low grade boiler but if you have a high grade boiler or suddenly it has become more difficult to heat your home, you may need your boiler fixed.

It is also a red flag if there are cold spots in your central heating system and radiators. You could have a poorly functioning boiler or a blocked central heating system.

Hot water and heating

If you notice when you put on both your heating and hot water but only one or the other is working, then you probably need your boiler fixed.

This may be a simple problem that is either down to the settings on your boiler and central heating system or because of a component with your boiler. This could be because your motorised diverter valve is broken, if this is the case, you should get a professional to replace the valve.

Boiler keeps switching itself off

Often when your boiler keeps switching itself off it means your boiler is not working correctly. Your boiler could have low water pressure, a problem with the thermostat or a lack of water flow due to a closed valve, air or the pump not circulating the water in the system properly.

Hearing strange sounds

If your radiator, boiler or pipes are making strange hissing or gurgling sounds, then it is time to get it checked. Your central heating system needs to be cleaned out from time to time and these noises might indicate they just need a power flushing but it can also be caused by air in the system, water pressure is too low or it’s kettling.

Imminent pump failure, particularly in older systems, could also be the possible problem. Either way it is a sign you need your boiler fixed.

Making sure your Boiler is ready for the colder nights ahead.

As autumn kicks in, the days become shorter and the colder nights set in.

It’s best to be prepared and to ensure your heating system is in working order. We would advise switching on your Boiler now before these colder nights hit so that you can identify any problems early and get help quickly, if required. This way you can be assured that your heating system is well set up to keep you and your family warm when you need it most.

As the colder days come in we will of course get busier and busier. We always say prevention is better than cure, if you notice anything amiss about your heating system its better to get on to us sooner rather than later.

A few tips we would recommend:

Switch on your Boiler:
A quick check to ensure that your boiler is turning on without any problems.

Check for Gauge Pressure:
Your boiler pressure gauge should read between 1-2 bars. If less than 1, you should top up your system’s water. Check again a few days later to see if the pressure has remained stable. If not, contact an engineer.

Check your Radiators for sufficient heat:
Air blockages can cause your radiators not to heat up evenly (i.e. the upper part of the radiator not being as warm as the lower part) and, consequently, lead to your home not being as warm as you might like. It is fairly common for bubbles of air to become trapped in the heating system, especially with older systems. Bleed your radiators if this is the case – see below for steps to bleed your rads.

Check for error codes during system boot-up:
Check whether your boiler display panel shows any fault codes when switched on. Error codes could signify a problem with fuel supply (gas, oil), pressure problems or a malfunction of electronic components.

Servicing your Boiler:

One of the best ways to ensure that your Boiler is ready for the colder nights is to ensure that it has an up to date service by a trained Engineer. A Boiler service will help to keep your boiler in the best possible condition and keep it running as reliably and efficiently as possible.

Your engineer will be able to check the condition of the Boiler and will be able to identify if any parts are worn or damaged long before they can become a risk. This will optimise the performance and safety of your Boiler.

How do I bleed my radiators?
Turn your heating on
Identify which radiators need bleeding
Turn off your central heating
Open the fill valve on system
Put a towel or bowl beneath the bleed valve on the radiator to catch any leaks
Slowly open the radiator bleed valve
Bleed the radiator
Make sure to close the fill valve when complete

*If you think your Boiler needs a service give us a call today 049-8543066 / 01-4851890 or email info@rrhp.ie

We are all about safety here at Ramor Renewables. This is why we preach to have your boiler checked. If you need to replace your boiler it is better to do so before an emergency rather than waiting until it stops working.

If you need a new boiler you are better off sorting it sooner rather than later. Since boilers can be expensive, it is advisable to choose one wisely according to your requirements. In case of new boiler installation Dublin and nearby towns have several companies that provide energy solutions, but you must make sure you select a provider with a proven track record. If you have an existing boiler, be watchful of any noticeable slump in performance to prevent the boiler from completely shutting down.

Having a well-maintained heating system in your home is essential to endure the cold winters. Knowing about boilers and how to maintain them is important because it can help in taking prompt action and arrange for the best boiler service Cavan can offer.

Whether you want to purchase a boiler for your new home or replace your old boiler, here are a few things about boilers you should know about

Boiler Types

Choosing the right boiler can help avoid wastage of energy. Therefore, it is important to know about the three most common types of boilers which are

Conventional or Heat-OnlyConventional boilers require more space and maybe ideal for large homes with several bathrooms. These boilers have a hot water storage tank where they store heated water for later use.

SystemSystem boilers occupy less space than conventional boilers and can be a great choice for average-sized homes. These boilers keep the water pressurized allowing multiple taps to be opened at once without any drop in pressure.

Combi or CombinationCombination boilers are very compact because they have no storage tank. They heat the water drawn from mains and supply the heater water instantly on demand. These boilers are generally preferred for apartments with small families. Combi-Storage boilers are also available which include a small storage tank for hot water.

Government Regulations

The new law that was introduced from 26th September 2018 under the Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive strictly limits harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission levels to 120mg/kWh. If you have an old boiler that does not satisfy this legislation, consider replacing it with an eco-friendly boiler.

Seasonal Efficiency

SEDBUK (Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the U.K) is a system used to compare the energy efficiency of the boilers. Pay attention to the seasonal efficiency of your boiler to see how much fuel is consumed to generate heat. Boilers with low ratings can result in elevated fuel costs and hence can turn out to be expensive over time.

Boiler Maintenance

It is necessary to get your boiler inspected periodically because malfunctions can cause dire consequences. The service professionals may perform the following routine checks

Check Legal Compliance of Boilers

Check Leaks and Corrosion

Check Boiler components such as the heat exchanger, main injector, burner, and spark probe.

Check Flue for Obstruction

Check Gas Pressure

Check Operational Faults

In case the service professional finds any major issues, then it is time to get a boiler replacement or repaired by trained technicians.

User Controls

See if your boiler has user controls that offer convenience while setting the temperature. Since overheating can cause boiler accidents, it is important to be able to easily control the DHW (Domestic Hot Water) temperature and the Central Heating temperature. If there is overheating, then immediately call for a boiler service providers. Overheating can be caused due to sedimentation or lime scale buildup in tanks.

Modern boilers compatible with smart controls help you control the heating schedules of your home from your phone. The smart controls facilitate energy efficiency because you can turn your heating on and off remotely.

Boiler Performance

By being mindful of any sudden changes in the boiler operation, you can prevent the boiler from breaking down. Here are the boiler characteristics you need to pay attention to

Boiler Noise
If you notice gurgling or any other strange noises while your boiler is running, it is time to take immediate action. Random noises can indicate a serious problem. Therefore, checking boilers regularly for banging and other unusual noises is advisable.

Unusual SmellCarbon monoxide poisoning can be dangerous and therefore any suspicious smell from your boiler should be taken seriously. Call for boiler service engineers immediately to check your boiler for leaks. Installing a carbon monoxide alarm can also alert you of gas leaks.

Visible DrippingAny liquid drips or leaks can be a sign of a severe problem and you might have to call boiler replacement technicians who can effectively get it done. The leaks can be due to corroded pipes or faulty pumps and if not taken care of, they can lead to electrical short circuits and other hazards.

The size of the boiler should also be taken into consideration during boiler installation. In case you need to repair or replace a boiler, compare the costs to see which option is better. Also, evaluate the time it takes for a functional boiler to be in place to make sure you do not suffer without an active heating system in your home.
