We are delighted to be opening our doors for building sites and replacing boilers in your home.

On the evening of Friday 27th March 2020, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced the lockdown for the majority of businesses in Ireland. That included to work carried out by ourselves.

With nearly 8 weeks of closure, we are not only celebrating the reopening of businesses but we are also ensuring the safety of our employees as they get back to work.

Wash your hands:

• after coughing or sneezing
• before and after eating
• before and after preparing food
• if you were in contact with someone who has a fever or respiratory symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing)
• before and after being on public transport if you must use it
• before and after being in a crowd (especially an indoor crowd)
• when you arrive and leave buildings including your home or anyone else’s home
• before having a cigarette or vaping
• if your hands are dirty

Roadmap for reopening society and businesses issued by Gov.ie

The reopening of construction sites was part of ‘Phase 1’ from the governments notice of reopening society and businesses. Also included in Phase 1 (issued on Monday 18th May 2020) was the reopening of hardware stores, builders merchants and those providing essential supplies and tools for gardening, farming and agriculture; garden centres and farmers markets.

Phase 2 is due to go ahead on Monday 8th June 2020. Phase 2 should allow small retail outlets to reopen with a small number of staff on the basis that the retailer can control the number of individuals that staff and customers interact with at any one time.

Phase 2 should also allow public libraries opening so long as the numbers allowed in are limited, social distancing is observed and there is strict hand-sanitising in place for anyone who goes into the library.

Phase 3 is due to go ahead on Monday 29th June 2020. Phase 2 should allow the opening of all other non-essential retail outlets on the basis of a restriction on the number of staff and customers per square metre so that social distancing can be maintained.

This is to be limited to retail outlets with a street-level entrance and exit and does not include those in enclosed shopping centres due to higher risk.

During phase 3 they also hope to see cafés and restaurants providing on-premises food and beverages can reopen. They must comply with social distancing and strict cleaning protocols.

Hygiene at work for reopening businesses:

• Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean. Do not share objects that touch your mouth such as bottles and cups.
• Disposable gloves: Do not wear disposable gloves in place of washing hands. The virus can get on gloves in the same way it gets on hands.
• Ensure people cough/sneeze into a tissue, sleeve or elbow to catch any droplets.
• Face masks: Face masks are unlikely to be of benefit it the wearer is not sick.
• Ensure no person with symptoms attends work/site. For example: fever (temperature), cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, etc.
• Workers must adhere to a social distance of 2 metres from each other.
• Ensuring that all surfaces and objects are cleaned and disinfected regularly.

Disadvantages

• Heat loss is a major disadvantage because water stored in the hot water cylinder will lose heat with time. An insulated tank can help in reducing heat loss.
• The two tanks and cisterns take up a lot of space and therefore regular boilers cannot be considered for smaller homes.
• Conventional boilers are more difficult and expensive to install than other boilers. It can also take longer to install these boilers.
• Heating water once the water from the hot water cylinder is used up takes time. Therefore, you may have to wait until the boiler heats the entire tank of water again.

System Boilers

System boilers are like conventional boilers because they too have a hot water storage cylinder. However, they do not have a cold water storage tank. Expansion vessel, pressure valve, and other components are built into the boiler and therefore they occupy less space. System boilers are also easier to maintain because there is no need for header tanks.

Advantages

• Easier and less expensive to install than conventional boilers because of the built-in components
• Multiple taps can be used at once without noticeable drops in water pressure or temperature
• Since system boilers do not need cold water storage tanks, they are good boiler replacements for smaller homes without a huge loft space.

Disadvantages

• Getting instant hot water is not possible with system boilers because the boiler heats the water again once the water in the hot water cylinder is exhausted.
• Although they do not take as much space as conventional boilers, system boilers still can take up space because they use hot water tanks.
• Heat loss is a problem with system boilers because the water is stored in the tank until use and the heat can be lost over time.

Combi Boilers

Combi boilers are the most cost-efficient boilers and are also compact because they do not have storage tanks. They are also generally energy-efficient and help lower your heating bills. A huge number of new boiler purchases are combi boilers because they are an excellent choice for small homes and apartments.

There is no heat loss in combi boilers because the heated water is not stored in a tank. These boilers heat the water directly from the mains and you can get an unlimited supply of hot water on demand.

• Combi boilers are easier, quicker, and cheaper to install

• Combi boilers might not be able to meet the high demand for hot water and are unsuitable for large homes
• Combi boilers might not compatible with all kinds of showers
• Without good water pressure, opening multiple taps can result in a pressure drop
• A backup immersion heater cannot be used with combi boilers. Therefore, you cannot get hot water until you get a boiler repair done
